Headstart Family Group Program for people with an ABI

Headstart team would like to inform you that we are currently seeking interested families to take part in the family group program in April and throughout 2010. Groups will run in St Albans/Sunshine (for North-Western suburbs).
Groups will run in St Albans/Sunshine (for North -Western suburbs). There will be 7-8 families in each 12 week group program. There is no charge, and some funding for transport costs. The Headstart groups are for people with traumatic brain injury and their families. They are designed to be used as an adjunct to TBI rehabilitation programs, and suit people with moderate-level brain injuries. They promote information-sharing, problem-solving and networking.
Headstart participants have a range of brain injuries, of varying time-lengths. Initial interviews are conducted, by the group facilitators, to assess goals, participation hurdles, and support requirements. The Headstart team can contact families directly to discuss the program.
Families are gradually introduced to the program and then supported throughout it. The team has received very positive feedback from participants. Group members often mention changes such as improved communication, better self image, smarter symptom management, and increased social/vocational activity. The program is currently being evaluated.
